Generally with a system such as yours I would loosen the packing nut and slide back on the shaft.
See what is in there. Could be all you need to do is add or replace the packing which I obtained at plumbing supply house. Pretty much just string and graphite with maybe some sort of lubricant added. Don't over tighen the packing nut, take it up bit by bit. I never worked on a M-H GP, this is just general info.
