I made that trip back in 1987. It's pretty good road for the most part. All of the original hiway has been redone. There were a few stretches of pretty rough pavement, and a few stretches of gravel. The gravel was actually better than the bad pavement. It can be a long haul between gas stations, so plan accordingly.

With the price of gas I wouldn't want to make the trip this summer.
