Hi Brian
I am writing you from Canada(southern Ontario)so our rules may or may not apply but since most plowman's associations follow international guidelines this is at least a starting point for you.
To qualify for the International Plowing Match(more Canadian than international but anyways) you need to have scored at least 125 out of a possible 200 points in a regional or county match in the PRECEDING year.Since national events are held before local matches by a month or so last fall's round of local matches would count towards this summer's IPM.The International Plowing Match has a web site (search plowing and it will come up in the first 20 or so responses) and this may be a good source for links and contacts for the American equivalent.
I have done quite a few searches of the internet for sites on plowing in general and match plowing and found remarkably little. On the American end of things I have found exactly zero.If you do find websites relating to the US plowing scene please forward them by e-mail and I would be most grateful. I have been contemplating creating a web page dedicated to plowing in general and match plowing as well. Mostly in response to the types of questions I have seen on these types of message boards as it seems practical info on plowing is hard to come by.Any feedback on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
In response to your last question there is no amount of practising that could be considered too much.If you can contact someone locally who is a longtime competitor I am sure you could arrange a demo. or teach-in of some kind as the type of people I have met in my 17 years of local match plowing would have to rate as the most helpful on the planet. Also ownership of or at least use of a fullblown "match special" plow would be an absolute requirement at a national event and probably neccessary at a local match in order to score high enough to qualify for the next level.Don't let this stop you from attending a local match with whatever you have.A few smiles from the old hands at a poor choice of plow is a small price to pay for an invaluable experience.
My personal choice for a plow is a Kvernelands but Overum,Fiskars and older(30 years or more american made equip.)can do a spectactular job in the right hands.
Local matches are open to anybody with a plow and the few dollars entry fee typically needed.
