Anyway back to your problem. Toolman is right, the gas being that old is probably not very good and won't burn very well. You could try just a small shot of starting fluid into the air intake while cranking the engine. If it doesn't fire then it's probably spark related, if it does start and run for a couple seconds until the either is gone then quits- it's not getting fuel. Changing the gas and cleaning out the carb. should do the trick. I probably would not change the battery size if it cranks ok. Once the fuel system is clean it should fire pretty quick. Good luck.
