For a rule of thumb, I like to stay close to the PTO line. If I am lightly loaded, I may drop to 1500, or in road gear going to a field I'd use 8th at 1000.

My yardstick on working is the rpm's. If your load is such that you drop over 10% in rpm's from plow up to plow down your lugging it. That's 200 rpm. If that happens, I either lighten the load or grab a gear.

Mine don't smoke, but if they did, if it smoked a little lightly loaded, I wouldn't let the smoke get too black with a load.
