I thoink they started making the new filters w/cap because people were screwing up the o-rings causing the sucker to pump fuel all over the place.
The one time in my life I was too lazy to can oil and filters, the lube place lost the o-rings. I was just starting a trip and had have a lot of fuel pumped out, part of which drained into the bell housing and cleaned the grease out of the throw out bearing. Needless to say I wasn't too happy.
I also discovered the new filters run about the same price as the old ones.
