Each of the 3 or 4 "fingers" pulls the pressure plate away from the lined plate, against sprig pressure. If one of the fingers s broken, the pressure plate will be pulled away from the lined plate unevenly, and the area of the pressure plate that is supposed to be retracted by the broken finger will "drag", or not release at all.
