Let's take the governor out of the loop. When it starts surging, either hold the governor connection to the carb, or disconnect the connecton. Do something to hold the butterfly in a fixed position so the engine won't attempt to run wide open. (piect of wire would work). I really think the gov is not the problem as it functions correctly when the machine is running properly. Then determine if it is spark or fuel. An aircleaner removal and can of starting fluid would be next. Do whatever you do to get it to surge (if it will now that the gov is disconnected) and when it drops in rpm's squirt it in the carb. It's reaction is where you head. My guess is that you have a magneto going out as they are notorious (spelling) for quitting when hot. Have had several. Most of my fuel problems (other than non vented fuel tank problems) are constant problems not thermally related......except for lean mixtures where I had an adjustment screw I could open and richen the mixture. When you say you smell gas, your magneto (coil) could be intermittently shorting out (or opening up)and doing the dirty deed. What you might do if you don't get what you want with the spray, is get it to malfunction and immediately remove the mag (coil) and put it in the freezer for 10-20 minutes then quickly reinstall and see if it fires. txblu
