A gasser is better for light/variable loads and general putting around. The diesel extracts more power per gallon of #2 diesel because there is no throttle plate strangling the engine. It's easier to tune an engine for steady speed/load operation, diesel fuel carries more enery per lb/gallon than gasoline. Diesels with thier higher compression ratios extract more of the heat/pressure from the burned fuel before exhausting the mixture. Some two stoke engines are now injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber and using stratified charge techology to mimic some diesel advantages.
