I had to replace because the 2 small o-rings were leaking diesel. I replaced bot sets of o-rings and the gasket. Can be done, but it is very delicate job. In my pump on a MF-690 Perkins there is a small spring that one end connects to base of the pump and the other end connects to the inside of the pump cover that you are removing. CAUTION: before disconnecting the spring, look very closely and write down where the ends are hooked. One end is hooked in a part shaped like a tombstone which has multiple holes. The other end hooks in a small plate which has multiple holes. These ends MUST be hooked in exactly the correct holes. Where these spring ends are hooked varies by engine and pump. lastly, if you are going to replace the gasket, then by all means replace the o-rings because some day they will start leaking.
