WAY!!! of topic but still......saving pics from Ne

Ok I know this is about as far off topic as you can get but I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction for an answer. I have Windows Xp with IE version 6. When I go to save a photo from th net or my online mail service , no matter what the format of the photo it makes me save it as a BMP file. I might come to me as a JPG but IE won' let me save it as that.When I first got the system it would let me but after upgrading windows it won't. Any ideas as to where I can go to find the answer or how to change IE to let me? These dang BMP's are big! Thanks!
