The H John Deere is one of the most popular J-D's to collect due to their size and relative rarity. To get started with yours I recommend you drain all the fluids first. Watch to see what they look like-if they are contaminated with water, metal filings or pieces etc. Remove the spark plugs then try turning the engine over by hand.
The point I am trying to make is that you need to evaluate the current condition and stabilize things. You do NOT want to do more damage before you know how things sit now. Get that far and then stop back here or on the John Deere forum. There are plenty of folks glad to give you a hand!
