I just read an interesting calculation. 1,000 tons of vegetation had to be buried in sediments, then cooked down there for ~300 millon years to convert to about 2 gallons of petroleum, then pumped out of the ground, processed and shipped to a gas station to put one gallon of gas in your car. Seems like $2 is pretty cheap from that perspective.
