12V regulator

I have a 12V solar system that goes through controlers (simaler
to a voltage regulator) I finaly found a tractor 12V regulator with
4 wire hook up F,L, BAT, G I could not find a wiring diagram that
would help me to use this in place of the 12 amp charge
controler I believe F is Field L is load BAT is battery and of
course ground now I have a comon ground for solar panel and
Battery bank and controler what I need to know is the 12V pos
from solor panel will that hook to field like pos output on
generator the of course my 12V lights to L for load and bat to
battery and all on the comon ground can someone tell me if they
think i got this right (field is the only one throwing me) it's been
a long time and i'm not sure of it's function. Thanks Jim
