My guess is he learned after he placed the ad that his price was too low and that he could do much better. Now he is hedging in order not to have to sell to those who call from that ad. He wants to sell to someone who doesn't know about that ad and the low price, so he can ask more. If I were you, I would forget him no matter how badly you want the part.
