The starting switch located to the left of the steering wheel controls the "Thermostarter". The switch operates the Thermostarter when turned clockwise about halfway to the position to engage the starter. Watch the oil pressure and charge indicator lights and those indicators will dim slightly when the Thermostarter is heating. The Thermostarter opens a heat sensitive valve and fuel drips onto a hot coil in the intake manifold. In 15 to 30 seconds, the Thermostarter will heat enough to help start the tractor, sometimes even starting a fire in the intake manifold for the hot fuel. This is good, the tractor will fire immediately when this hot stuff reaches the cylinder. Often, one can hear the "poof" when the fire starts. Crank the tractor immediately. I am told that Ford used the same system for cold starting. Some say that the Ford part will fit the Long, some say it will not. I do not personally know for sure. Turning the starter switch counterclockwise does not energize the Thermostarter.
