You did not say what year of an A you are working on. I have a 49 A and this is how it comes off. Remove the nose cone (3 bolts) You can them remove the two 1/2" bolts on the front of the steering gear. You will need to remove steering wheel. Then all you need to do is turn the shaft and it will screw out of the box towards the front. Then just slide it out.
You can remove the hood by unhooking the generator wires at both ends (generator and amp gage), remove both grill screens, loosen dash, remove gas line, unbolt and it will lift off (lot easyer lift off with two people)
