Centuries ago if a woman asked a man to marry her on leap day, he was obliged by law to marry her. Severe repercussions ensued if he refused. The creator of "Lil Abner" brought about a fictional Sadie Hawkins day in his cartoon, giving single ladies a chance to pursue a man with matrimony being the end result. That was in 1937. The tradition swept the nation with Sadie Hawkins Day dances being held, etc. Sooooo single guys---lay low today if you are confirmed bachelors.
