I think you answered your own question. If it was working before you worked on the lights, you probably lost the ground on one side of the 24V system. If it is like the old 24V systems on the 3010/4010, 3020/4020 Diesels, each battery had its own ground to allow 12V lights and accessories to be used and allow 24V starting, however, proper grounding was necessary to allow the system to be "balanced", and allow each battery to charge equally, and share the load. From what I remember, the ground(s) were basically a 10 guage wire, so it would be easy to lose ground and not notice it.
