If the sending unit has only one terminal, then the connections go from power to gauge to sending unit which controls the amount of current by varying the resistance value to ground. In the temp gauge that means at low temp the resistance is high so little current flows and as the coolant heats up the resistance is lowered and more current flows causing the gauge to show a higher reading. In the oil pressure gauge the resistance is high with no pressure and lowers as pressure increases. The two sending units vary resistance by different methods so are not interchangeable.
