You won't hurt a 6 V starter by running it at 12 V. You actually have a longer lived starter. With 12 V across it, the starter current is halved which means the resistive heating is reduced signifincantly (by a factor of 4). That's not to say a sorry old worn out 6 V starter will last forever at 12V. All things being equal a six volt starter run at 12 V will out last a 6 V starter run at 6 V. Hope this helps.
