Old is right, the 6 volt starter should be able to take 12 volts with no major problems. Being designed for the lower voltage the insulation, etc is all heavier than it would be in a 12 volt, and that's why it will work 12V to 6V but not the other way. We ran the one on our 440 Deere crawler like this for over 10 years, after we converted it, before the starter finally gave out, and Lord only knows how old it was before we got it. In the end you'd be money ahead to bite the bullet and get a regular 12V starter. I'd try to find a good rebuild shop that can make you up one before I'd spend $185 though. Around here I can get a big, reconditioned Delco starter, outright for that price, so your's shouldn't be nearly that, if you find the right place. Good luck.
