I've spent some time in both 9600 and 9700 models. In my opinion, the 9700 is a decent unit. The main problem we had was keeping the rear wheel hubs tight. The 96 and 97 use a giant u-bolt that should be kept really tight. Neighbor stripped out a set on a 9600 and had to buy a new set of rear wheel centers. My dad had a 9600, and it was a lemon. They used a hydraulic fitting type that used a rubber ring to seal the tube. These fittings constantly blew out. Had to replace the whole fitting when this happened. It was also a chronic overheater. The front wheel studs would break out once in a while. It was the only tractor we ever had that had to be split open for clutch work in the first threee months of ownership. Dad traded it in for a 4640 JD after two years of ownership. We saw the same tractor show up on the dealer's lot as a trade-in several times.

The dualpower is nice, but expensive to overhaul. I know guys that still run the 9600 model, but they keep a bucket of fittings and wheel studs around.

The 9700 was a better model. The 401 was a decent engine in both of them, but I've seen them drop valves. I've heard it was prone to cavitation, but I have no evidence. We knew a guy with a tw-35, and he said it was a good tractor as long as it was running. It had some issues with the transmission.
