My take on this is that the 6.0 was their way of meeting current or upcoming emmisions requirements. They may have rushed it a bit, but I'll bet that engine will turn out as good as any of the newer high-tech low emissions diesels. In Barbara Marsh's book, "A Corporate Tragedy", there is an interesting section on how the for-runner to the 7.3, the 6.9 came about. It's an interesting read.
