Bill, had the same problem about a year ago...I thought it was rain water that had collected , then froze ..displacing the seal, and mine was a gusher when I started it up one day...it had never leaked there before...Had to take the column out of the tractor and purchase an update to fix it....I did the work myself, but would cost a bunch if I paid a mechanic to do it....John Deere dealer ordered what I needed....Mine is a diesel backhoe tractor and the loader presented some problems reaching in and taking it apart, several seals, and now I have a new steering wheel and cap to keep the water out of there...the old steering wheel was so chipped at the cap base that it always caught on my Carhartt jackets....I did not pull the entire unit or rebuild the entire unit, only fixed what was needed, as you never know what is going to blow next just by looking at the frayed hoses, etc..Let me know how it's coming along...Uncle
