accualy on a positive ground system you should hook the positive cable last to a good ground away from the battery, this way reduces the risk of explosion. one little trick I use is to unplug the charger from the wall before disconecting it. another trick I use being that my 6V charger died is to hook 2 6V batterys together in series and charge them as a 12.
