I have an old IH 10 footer which came originally with 18" discs, scalloped front, plain rear. It is on a rigid frame which I think is necessary to force the plow to work against it'self when breaking soil. It has 4 adjustable sets of discs and I run the discs in the highest angle that I can which is 23 degrees. I think the max angle is such that two adjacent discs cut through the soil and leave no turf (1st pass in sand, 2nd pass in clay).

I recently redisc'd it because the fronts wore down to 16 inches. I replaced with 22" because I wanted to use it as a plow, not a disc harrow.

I installed the 22's and put about 600# of dead weight on her and WOW. I broke up heavy clay(Houston Black Clay) that hadn't been tilled in 30 years and after 2 passes and it just sifted through your fingers (after it set for awhile). I then came back with a spike toothed harrow (rigid frame also) and I have a smooth soft field (to 6# deep) ready for planting. My JD 4010 (80 hp) pulled it nicely.

I'm a little guy (acreage wise) and now I only need 2 implements to prepare acreage for planting.

I don't like moldboards because I don't want to bury my topsoil, they leave a bumpy mess, they are hard to control (old ones with half the parts missing) and they aren't very wide (unless you can affort a big tractor).
