It has probably gotten hot and been cooked.. so now it spins over slowly due to high internal resistance and wipes out your battery quicker. (if this is your problem) Could also be what everyone else suggested. Since I am not standing there looking at your machine. When I read you post, it sounds more to me like your starter is dragging.

Anyway, if slow cranking is the problem. The brushes/armature could be shot. I am assuming that you have the original 6 volt starter still in place? Most people when they convert do not change it. Most 6 volts will last until they get overheated. If you have been cranking and cranking on it to the point you wear the battery down. It has probably gotten hot.

If what you have is a slow cranking problem, then take the starter and have it rebuilt. Let them know you need it converted to 12 volts. Most places that rebuild starters can do that. I also suggest that you replace any of the battery cables and terminal ends if they are old and questionable. Make sure you have a good ground.

I would also give tractor a tune up as everyone else has suggested. Start with new properly gapped plugs, new wires, dist. cap and rotor along with points set at the proper gap. Might put in a new coil. They are not that expensive. You said your carb is new.. so that should be ruled out.
