I had the same event to happen a few years ago, What happens is there are about 10 case hardened bolts in the large drive gear and 1 or 2 of them break and fall to the bottom and wedge and then crack the housing, it was welded as you can weld just a couple of inches and wait for it to cool or you can drill a hole at each end of the crack and put a screw in the drilled holes after seam is welded. I can't remember exactly but and I.H. dealer charged $3.50 or 4.00 apiece for these bolts and that was about 15 years ago.
