Pitch, It depends on what you prefer in a transmission. If you want to get an automatic you are pretty much limited to the electric/hydraulic system. You won't be dissapointed though. I'm a mechanic for a D.P.W. and we have 6 one-tons. 1 std. trans with a PTO, 1 auto with electric/hyd. and 2 with central hydraulics (belt driven hyd pump on engine and hyd valves for dump and snow plow). The electric/hyd unit has been very dependable and trouble free and has plenty of power for dumping. By far the best system is the central hydraulic one but it is expensive and you probably won't find too many used trucks with them. I'm specing a new '04 truck now and central hydraulics will add about $4,000 to the price. The std trans/PTO is old school and the most troublesome on an older truck. Worn linkages, leaky PTO seals and rusted up driveshafts are just some of the problems. All of our larger trucks,Class 7 and 8 dumps have live hydraulic pumps shafted off the front of the engine no more PTO's. Hope this helps.

The answer to our needs materialized in the form of a '44 Farmall A, complete with cultivators, discs, single plow, a 5ft.Woods belly mower and one, mounted spare 9.00x24 rear wheel.
