split manifold

OK, I am nuts, lets get that settled before I ask advice. If you split a manifold on a 6 cyl, do you have to partition off each side or just cut a hole and let the exhaust do its thing. The engine that I am talking about is a 6 cyl
chrysler flat head. I don't want it to be loud like a woman I used to know, just soft and sweet.
