The color is determined by operating temperature burning deposits from the fuel, and any oil it's using. The valves, when new, would all have a silver/gray color of steel look. Are you the person I replied to several days ago about the odd and even-firing engines, and did you check this out? If the timing is late on that cylinder due to a mismatch of crankshaft firing position, and distributor cam firing position you're gonna get hot valves on the late cylinder.
