I've always thought to use a high or intermediate gear to tow start because of the following:
1: less strain on the drivetrain
2: the drive tires are less apt to drag and tractor fishtail if the clutch is let out too fast.
3: the operator of the pulling rig has a tendancy to go faster than he or she realizes, thereby over-revving the engine, especially if the pulling rig is a car or truck.
