When they send out the bill they compute the interest to the day of the close of the billing cycle. Some days later when you get the bill and want to pay it off, they compute the interest to the day you talk to them on the phone. That's where the extra dough comes in.
Hope this helps. (you should consider yourself lucky to be paying off 3k plus in one hunk.)
