Both Mark and Kevin are correct. The engine oil in a diesel engine gets black almost immediately. It may have nothing to do with the internal condition of the engine. Shell Rotella is a really good diesel oil. Make sure that you use a good quality oil filter. I would recommend Wix.
Whatever you do don't use a FRAM. They are cheap and poorly made. Just take one apart and compare it to a Wix. You will see.
