Seems I've spent most of my adult life scraping grease off old iron. Now, there is grease, and then there is the OLD HARDENED GREASE which I think you are referring to. If you've got a few extra dollars, you can hire an "on-site" industrial power washer guy to show up. He's got the unit with superheated and super-pressurized water and steam and detergent that'll clean barnacles off the Titanic, but it won't be cheap. The other solution is to scrape it off by hand, not fun but it's gotta come off. Afterwards, you can use any of the methods others below have suggested for what's left. The only tool to use is two of what we used to call "lino" knives. That's the knife with the thin, hook-shaped blade with a big round curved handle that you can get a real grip on. Leave one as it is (with the point as it left the factory) and round the point off somewhat on the second one with your bench grinder. That's all you need, no hard grease will stand a chance. Wear a glove, not for the mess but to eliminate the skinned knuckles.
