I once was called to a John Deere repair shop and they had split a big JD (don't remember the model) but they were kinda nervous about the fact that all the bolts in the crankshaft holding the flywheel were sheared off (flush) and stated that a new crank cost $1800...and their other tractor was down too and right in the middle of crops. Wanted to know if I (as a machinist) could do anything with it...as the owner looked on...I found a prick punch and small hammer and within 30 minutes had them all removed. Big relief to owner...only had to buy new flywheel and 6 or 8 bolts...a great big smile and a fifty dollar bill took care of the rest of the deal. He was a friend...so I took the money...you make money off of your friends cause your enemies don't come around...right?
You know, if I'd thought about it at the time...I wonder what their reaction would have been if I'd offered them the loan of a 53 year old TO-20 Ferguson or a MF-35...they had all John Deere equipment. They'd probably said bring them out tonight...after dark. Fred OH
