You are right about folks back then not having anything. My folks had a Durant that was given to my mother by her brother who was gassed during
WW I and eventually died. My dad said that he would have left the country, but didn't have enough money to even do that! Back then farmers were dependent upon each other
because they often needed help from a neighbor,
especially at harvest time. I go back home now,
and the neighbors don't neighbor anymore.
