As the others say. Live pto lets you stop moving the tractor, shift gears, etc. while the pto continues to run. Independent pto is a little better version of Live pto, but either are good and some people interchange the terms.

On tractors without live pto, _any_ time you push in the clutch to stop moving the tractor, the pto also stops. So you can't clear slugs in a baler, corn picker, snow blower. Also as you start baling (etc.) you put the pto in gear & the tranny in gear. Let out the clutch & both start up at the same time - more stress on the tractor. One learns how to plan ahead & quick-shift to get around this, but a whole lot less fun.

There is a safety issue. A heavy fly-wheel type load like a brush hog is directly linked to your rear wheels on a non-live pto tractor. This flywheel effect will continue to move the tractor, even if you push in the clutch & use the brakes. You need to use an over running clutch on your pto shaft to be safe in such cases - allows the pto to freewheel in one direction. Live pto tractors have this built in.
