Live PTO will continue to run under power, when you push the clutch in to disengage the transmission. It also lets the hydraulic pump stay under power at the same time. It is usually controlled by a "two-stage clutch". That is, the clutch pedal is pushed halfway down to disengage the transmission, and the rest of the way to disengage the PTO, and hydraulic pump.
"Independant PTO" usually has a separate clutch, or control for the PTO, and the hydraulic pump operates seperately.
Others might be able to explain this better, but that is the basics of Live PTO. John
