Diesel engine question... starting after on its si

Started it up after it was on its side for about 20 minuites and it smoked like crazy, didnt before it went over. I ran it for about 15 min and the smoke cleared up a good bit but never totally stopped, then I shut it down because I had to go somewhere. Will this clear up If I run it longer? And what could be causing the smoke. I dont know much about diesel construction and oil management in the block/sump. Everything else is fine. Its a brand new engine I'm a little concerned right now, all this thanks to a rambuncious friend of mine. Thanks for your comments.
