Allan, chains are the only way to go, as you have already realized. Adding more weight will not do a bit of good on hardpacked snow or ice. I can recall several times when the 4020 we were using to grind feed wouldn't pull itself away from the corn bin because of the ice, the little old Farmall H with chains on came to the rescue every time.
