to far to trust

I'm interested in purchasing a standard type tractor such as a IH660 or 830 JD. I know that there are many located in Canada and some northern and western US states. Where I'm located it would not be possible for me to view the tractors. Since viewing this board I have noticed that this type if tractor is handled by three or four dealers in Canada, Minnesota and Wisconsin. From experiences of others would I be foolish to trust a dealer at such a distance without seeing the tractor I want to purchase. I have been told it would be better to buy right from a farmer that would sell because they would know the history of the tractor. I have read where some individuals have had problems with dealers. I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!
