There should be a little pin sticking through the end of the shaft. If you clean up the old grease and paint around the shaft you may find the letters "D" and "S". By the way, according to the operators's manual, the shaft is called a "Control valve indexing bushing".There was also a special wrench available to turn them. Probably the reason the metal had been cut away was for access with a regular open end wrench.
