The inner "race" of these bearings is the steering shaft. Check those surfaces for pitting etc. What our mechanic always did was remove the pitman shafts and hold the lower caged roller in place with his fingers while inserting the upper assembly to eliminate it moving and being crushed. Also you should buy the shim pack and set your preload to the correct spec. don't remember the correct poundage but it's probably in your I&T manual.
