On most small cylinder rods it is cheaper to replace the rods if severely pitted, than it is to repair and rechrome them. On larger rods, rechroming is the way to go. Small pits can be filled with JB weld and sanded smooth. Powder coating, in my opinion is pretty much a joke for anything that operates outside. All it takes is one little chip, and the rust or corrosion starts and off comes the powder coating in flakes. Rust seems to grow under it and spread, until large hunks of it flake off.
