I have one of those old beasts, have had it since new in 78 0r 79. While it has not been popular among many, my old girl has been quite reliable. I have heard some horror stories but can not say I have had the same problems. With more than 5000hrs on it, there has been no major repairs.
It will not lug like inline 6diesels the RPM's have to be up, the V8 Perkins tops out at about 2850 or so. I usually try to gear my so I am running about 1800 to 2100 rpm. The V8 perkins sure does roar at full throttle.
