Garry, Your teacher never read about USAF Capt. Joe Kittinger who rode a skyhook balloon 102,000 above New Mexico then jumped. He reached a maximum velocity of 625 mph (not quite supersonic), as he fell for nearly a minute before encountering any significant atmosphere. He opened his chute at around 50,000 feet and walked away smiling when it was all over.
