O.T. tire rotation

Hi, I realize this is off topic but is the sort of thing the people here seem to know about.
I live in northern Maine where snow and ice is a fairly anual event. (Hasn't missed yet in the 41 years I've been around!) I keep two sets of wheels and tires for my vehicals. Plain for summer and studed snow for winter. I heard a while back that belted radials should only be rotated front to back and not side to side as this would change the direction of rotation and break a belt in the tire. Sooo, I've been going driver front to driver rear and so on. Thing is, after a couple of seasons the studs on the winter tires get real worn on one side and lose a lot of bite. Changing sides each time would make them wear evenly. By doing this do I run a higher risk of breaking a belt in the tires?
