9N ignition/timing

I recently had my 1941 9N engine machined and rebuilt. I rebuilt the distributer (points, condenser, cap, and coil) and set reset the timing at low rpm. It is difficult to start and backfires a little through the carb when doing so. Once going it purs like a beauty when idling but pings and fires back through the exhaust when revving up. It can barely run at mowing speed and I will need to plow snow soon. Anyone know what I am missing? I have the points at 0.015 like the manual suggests and am at the end of my rope. This Ford may end up as a very expensive boat anchor. It has given me 15 years of trouble free service prior to a blowout which was all my fault last winter. I love it but it doesnt love me.
